The FDA recently approved a new prescription medication to fight acne. Aczone (dapsone) Gel 5% contains a powerful antibiotic that also is anti-inflammatory, quickly clearing redness and swelling. The topical formulation provides patients with a convenient and effective therapy. In two recent University based clinical studies in 3000 acne patients, Aczone Gel achieved statistically significant percent reduction in the number of acne lesions and overall appearance. Some patients in the study experienced oiliness/peeling, dryness, and redness, though this is common with most acne medications and is easily treated with moisturizers allowing patients to continue Aczone till they see results.
