Chemical Peel and Dermabrasion
Chemical peel utilizes a solution applied to the skin to exfoliate and smooth the appearance and texture of sun damaged outer skin layers of the face. A chemical peel is best suited for people with fine wrinkles, uneven skin tone, pigmentation and brown age spots or blemishes. This has the effect of enhancing the appearance and boosting self confidence. A peel is sometime useful to improve facial acne scars, control acne and eliminating pre-cancerous growths.
Also called power peel, a chemical peel is performed most commonly with trichloroacetic acid (TCA), phenol and alphahydroxy acids (AHAs). Micro Dermabrasion or microdermabrasion is more superficial and laser surgery skin resurfacing is deeper therapy. Actinic keratosis or precancerous growths are best treated with Photodynamic therapy (PDT) which involves first painting the face with a photosensitizing agents followed by an intense blue light. This actually kills cancer cells. Age spots and wrinkles are also improved with PDT. This treatment is available in our East Brunswick, NJ office. Health insurance may cover photodynamic therapy and a chemical peel procedure for precancerous growths and we will help you check with your individual carrier.
As the various options of facial peels versus laser peels versus Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is confusing, it is essential to consult your plastic surgeon as to which cosmetic surgery is right for you. Various implants such as collagen, hylaform or botox complement but do not replace chemical peels. During your consultation, other cosmetic plastic surgery procedures can also be discussed such as abdominal tightening, abdominoplasty, blepharoplasty, breast reduction, liposuction, or tummy tuck.
